“I initially worked with Thomas as the consultant and person who came to my house to discuss both the interior and exterior paint projects. He was great to work with, knew his info, made great suggestions, and checked back on any questions I had before I decided to use New Leaf Painting to do the job. When the projects started I worked with Billy and his crew. They were great to work with. They were on time, professional, well mannered. They set up in the garage and I was amazed at how quickly they removed old wallpaper and prepped the rooms for painting. They checked with me to make sure I was good as I was working from home. The interior turned out great. They then tackled the outside. I needed some repair work on my chimney and we discussed additional work they found after tearing off old parts. They made sure I was ok with what needed to be done. The same thing happened by my front door. Then I wanted my front door stained but they convinced me I would be unhappy with the results so we went to plan B and painted the door the same color as the shutters and it turned out great. I had friends over Labor Day Weekend and they were impressed with how well the house looked. All the workers put in plenty of hours, were courteous, cleaned up and generally went the extra mile on my projects. I appreciated the hard work and attention to detail. Overall I was extremely satisfied with the results of both the interior and exterior paint projects. Thanks New Leaf.”

“Thomas Drake, the owner came out in person and provided a free estimate to remove wallpaper and repaint my Moms master and guest bathrooms. He emailed me the quote the same day. He was very courteous and thorough. The quote was reasonable so we scheduled the work. His crew arrived on time and did a fantastic job removing the wallpaper and painting the walls. They completed the job in 2 days. The crew was experienced, courteous, friendly and hardworking. I highly recommend A New Leaf Painting and will use them again for any future paint work.”

“Update: had the crew come back a few months later for the exterior. You won’t be disappointed. We hired A New Leaf to repaint the interior of our home, and we couldn’t be happier! Thomas, the owner, came out for an estimate and immediately set the tone for the whole experience—professional, friendly, and easy to work with. Michelle, Rusty, and Dale were phenomenal—they went above and beyond, even helping fix a few spots that needed repair before painting, which made a huge difference. The customer service was top-notch, and it was a pleasure to talk with them. Our home feels completely refreshed, like a brand-new space. We’re already planning to hire the same exact crew again in the spring for the exterior. Highly recommend!”

Thank you Thomas Drake for a competitive price, and a great crew. Your company is certainly top shelf. Cheers! Andy N.”

Wallpaper Removal Is Only Half the Job

Removing wallpaper correctly means preparing the wall underneath for what comes next. Our process addresses the wallcovering, adhesive, surface damage, repairs, sanding, and priming needed to leave the walls ready for a professional painted finish.

  • Wallpaper & Wall AssessmentWe inspect the wallpaper, seams, adhesive, wall condition, and any previous repairs before choosing the safest removal approach.
  • Wallpaper RemovalWallpaper, borders, and wallcoverings are carefully removed from walls, ceilings, and accent areas where included in the scope.
  • Adhesive RemovalRemaining paste and adhesive residue are cleaned from the surface so they do not interfere with repairs, primer, or the new finish.
  • Drywall & Surface RepairsTorn drywall paper, gouges, cracks, loose areas, and other damage uncovered during removal are repaired before refinishing.
  • Skim Coating & SandingUneven or damaged surfaces are skim coated where needed, then sanded smooth to create a more uniform surface for painting.
  • Priming & Paint PreparationExposed or repaired surfaces are sealed and primed where needed, leaving the walls properly prepared for a professional interior finish.

The A New Leaf Standard

The Difference Is in the Details You Notice Every Day.

A fresh coat of paint is easy to promise. What you live with afterward is the difference — careful preparation, quality materials, clean lines, protected surfaces, clear communication, and a job finished with care.

Since 2010, we’ve brought that same standard of care to every project — from a single room or cabinet refinishing project to complete exteriors, commercial spaces, and concrete coatings.

  • We fix before we paint

Stucco cracks, wood rot, drywall damage, and other surface problems are addressed before the finish coat goes on.

  • One project at a time

Your crew stays focused on your project instead of bouncing between multiple jobs and leaving you waiting.

  • Your home stays protected

Floors, furniture, landscaping, and surrounding surfaces are carefully protected while we work, with clean job sites maintained throughout the project.

  • Built for Florida homes

Our preparation and coating systems are selected around the heat, humidity, moisture, stucco, and exterior conditions common throughout Northeast Florida.

What to expect

Our Proven Wallpaper Removal Process

  1. 01

Professional Removal — No Drywall Damage

The most common DIY wallpaper removal mistake in homes is tearing into drywall paper, which creates a surface that bubbles, shows texture, and absorbs paint unevenly for years. Our crews are trained in controlled scoring, steaming, and solution-based removal that separates wallpaper cleanly from the substrate — regardless of whether it’s strippable, coated, or paste-applied to raw drywall.

    • Wallpaper Type Assessment: Strippable, vinyl-coated, or fabric-backed — identified before we start.
    • Controlled Scoring: Precision scoring that opens the coating without gouging the drywall.
    • Professional Solution: Commercial-grade enzyme-based removers, not just water.
    • Full Protection: Floors, trim, and electrical covered before any moisture touches your walls.

Drywall paper torn during DIY removal cannot be painted over without extensive skim-coat repair — which often costs more than professional removal would have.

Wall Repair & Prep After Removal

Removing wallpaper almost always reveals something underneath that needs attention — adhesive residue, torn facing paper, skim coat damage, water stains, or texture inconsistencies. We don’t paint over these and call it done. Every wall is skimmed, sanded, primed with a shellac-based sealer, and made paint-ready before the first finish coat goes on. What’s underneath won’t show through our finish. Period.

    • Adhesive Residue: Fully dissolved and cleaned — not painted over.
    • Drywall Facing Repair: Skim coat applied wherever paper is torn or lifted.
    • Shellac-Based Primer: Seals stains and old adhesive so they don’t bleed through finish coats.
    • Texture Matching: Orange peel or knockdown matched to the rest of the room.

Jacksonville’s humidity accelerates adhesive residue bonding to drywall over time — skipping the shellac primer step causes paint to peel within 12–18 months.

Same-Crew Paint Finish — One Project, Start to Done

Most homeowners remove wallpaper and then hire a second contractor to paint — and discover the first crew left something the second crew has to fix. We handle both in one uninterrupted project with the same team. From first score to final finish coat, nothing gets handed off. The wall is assessed, stripped, repaired, primed, and painted by one crew with full accountability for the final result.

    • Sherwin-Williams® Emerald or Duration: Specified by sheen for each room.
    • Benjamin Moore® Regal & Aura: Premium options available on every project.
    • Mildewcide Standard: Required in Jacksonville’s humidity — applied in kitchens and baths.
    • Free Color Consultation: Large-format samples brought to your home before we start.

Typical wallpaper removal + paint project is completed in 2–4 days. One crew. One estimate. One result you’re protected by in writing.

Wallpaper Removal Questions, Answered

What to know before the wallpaper comes down and the walls get painted.

  • Wallpaper removal costs vary based on the number of rooms, wall condition, wallpaper type, number of layers, adhesive, accessibility, and the amount of repair and preparation needed afterward. We provide a written estimate that outlines the removal and preparation scope before work begins.

  • Most wallpaper removal projects take anywhere from a day to several days depending on the amount of wallpaper, how well it was installed, the type of adhesive, and the condition of the walls underneath. Larger or more difficult projects may take longer.

  • In some situations it is possible, but we generally prefer removing wallpaper when practical so the wall can be properly inspected, repaired, prepared, and painted. Painting over wallpaper can create visible seams, adhesion problems, or future failure if the wallpaper or adhesive is unstable.

  • Once the wallpaper is removed, we inspect the surface for torn drywall paper, adhesive residue, gouges, cracks, loose areas, and other damage. The walls are repaired, sanded, primed where needed, and prepared before finish paint is applied.

  • It can, especially if the wallpaper was applied directly over unprimed drywall or has been in place for many years. We remove it as carefully as possible and repair damaged areas as part of the preparation process when included in the project scope.

  • Yes. Remaining adhesive should be removed or properly addressed before painting. Leaving adhesive on the wall can affect primer and paint adhesion and may create an uneven finish.

  • Yes. Older homes sometimes have more than one layer of wallpaper or previous repairs underneath. Multiple layers generally require more time and preparation, and the condition of the wall is evaluated as each layer is removed.

  • Often, yes. Primer may be needed after repairs, torn drywall paper, staining, adhesive removal, or other surface issues. The primer system is selected based on the condition of the wall before finish coats are applied.

  • Yes, when texture repair is part of the scope. If wallpaper removal exposes damaged or uneven areas, we can repair and blend common wall textures so the finished surface looks more consistent before painting.

  • Yes. Wallpaper removal is commonly performed as part of a complete wall restoration and interior painting project, including removal, repairs, sanding, priming, and finish painting.

  • Generally, our wallpaper removal work is performed as part of an interior painting project rather than as a standalone removal-only service. This allows one team to handle the removal, wall repair, preparation, primer, and finished paint together.

  • In most cases, wallpaper can be removed and the existing walls repaired and prepared for painting. If the drywall is severely damaged, deteriorated, or has extensive surface failure, replacement may be the better option. We evaluate the condition before recommending the approach.
